About

Hi. I’m Grant. I’ve dedicated the last twenty years to visual communication and interaction design, contributing both as a team leader and as an individual contributor.

As a designer, I specialize in shaping brand identities and crafting unique experiences. I work with clients to match their goals with impactful concepts and cohesive design systems. As a creative leader, I guide teams toward the same goals, ensuring alignment with clear objectives and an overarching vision.

Most recently, that included a focus on energy-efficiency initiatives with CLEAResult, heading up design at Wirecutter, and working independently with a variety of startups, established companies, agencies, political campaigns, and nonprofits. Here are just a few:

Who
Grant

I’m one of those morning people. I spent the first half of my life in Oklahoma, but sadly lack a folksy accent. I’m a dog person born in the year of the dragon. I don’t cook often, but I’m a dishwasher-loading virtuoso. I bleed B-negative and I sweat the details. He/him.
WHAT
Designer

I’m a multidisciplinary designer (AKA “generalist”) so I do all the things, but I tend to focus on branding and digital experiences. As a creative director, this comprehensive knowledge base offers a huge advantage when building and supporting teams of diverse specialists.
WHEN
Since 2000

During the past 20+ years (roughly 45,000 worked hours), I’ve had opportunities to contribute at every level within a wide range of companies and industries. I’ve had a front-row seat to remarkable successes as well as significant failures. I’m eager to share the benefits of this knowledge.
WHERE
Portland, Oregon

I’m currently seated at an occasionally tidy desk in my cozy office within the attic of our 100-year-old (haunted) house on a shady lane in NE PDX, just a stone’s throw from Grant Park. Dogs are singing and birds are barking.
WHy
It could be better

Because thoughtfully designed things and processes really do improve the quality of actual lives, I humbly offer my compulsive need to organize and optimize this world, one pixel at a time. Minimal environmental impact and accessibility for all. Beacuse we are still the good guys, right?
How
Humanity

Like any good designer, I’ve found it’s best to approach new challenges with a humble, open mindset, coupled with sincere empathy with the users, customers, or audience. To find the most reliable path to a creative and successful solution, I use a human-centered design process tailored to each project. Generally, I divide these into the steps of identification, ideation, and iteration. But any process is only a means to an end and should never get in the way. I guess my point is this: I strive to make all the pixels pretty, both on and with purpose. And I love to work with people with similar mindsets.

I’m currently open to commissions, collaborations, and new projects.

Should we work together? Let’s find out.
